Prime Minister the Most Honourable Andrew Holness ON, PC, has praised the National Housing Trust (NHT) for playing a critical role in the creation of intergenerational wealth on the island. This he said during the NHT’s handing over ceremony of Friendship Oaks in Goshen, St Elizabeth on Friday (May 17).
The Prime Minister, who referred to the NHT as ‘customer centric,’ highlighted the important part the organisation plays in breaking intergenerational poverty.
“Owning a home or piece of land is a major part of wealth creation for families, but more so, it is the creation of intergenerational wealth, meaning that when the family gets this property, it is a legacy to be passed on for generations to come. Indeed, it can break the cycle of poverty,” he said.
One hundred and six residential lots were handed over at the ceremony. The NHT has declared that 150 one-bedroom units are currently being developed and will be handed over at a later date. This means at the end of the Phase 1 development, residents of Goshen will see the addition of 256 housing solutions to the community.
The Prime Minister said homeownership “is seen as the first step in ending intergenerational poverty and create intergenerational wealth and the NHT is playing a critical role in that.”
The development is located on 36.8 hectares of land in Goshen, approximately 11.5 km southeast of Santa Cruz. The NHT hopes to bring to the market a further 4,108 housing solutions in the parish of St. Elizabeth in the next six years.
